Past and Present & Men of the Times by Captain William Jackson Barry
Captain William Jackson Barry was as colourful an individual as his life was. He has written several books, Past and Present is his Autobiography, and starts from the time of his birth in England, through his voyage out to Australia in the service of Sir John Alcock. His adventures around Australia and New Zealand, whaling ships, bushrangers, ect... eventually settling in Cromwell, New Zealand, and becoming the towns first Mayor. There are also the biographies of some of the men he had come across during his travels.
In his later years he also gave public entertaining renditions of his adventures.
