Otago Birth Records from Otago Newspaper Entries

The newspapers that the entries are taken from include

-      Bruce Herald (published in Milton)

-      Clutha Leader (published in Balclutha)

-      Mataura Ensign (published in Gore)

-      North Otago Times (published in Oamaru)

-      Otago Witness (published in Dunedin)

-      Otautau Standard and Wallace County Standard (published in Otautau)

-      Southland Times (published in Invercargill)

-      Tuapeka Times (published in Tuapeka)

 

There are about 10 thousand entries up to 1900, though there are some entries to 1909

These entries include:

Surname

Fathers name or initials (some entries also contain the occupation of the father)

Whether the child was a son or daughter (or twins or still born)

Date of birth (day, month, year)

Place of Birth

Newspaper the entry was extracted from.

 

Some of the entries may be entered in the lists more than once, this is due to the parties making more than one entry or putting notices in multiple newspapers, all duplicate entries have been included as some entries may contain more information when listed in newspapers that are not local to the parents address.

 

The newspaper entries do not contain the first names of the infant, but by going to the New Zealand Government Birth Death and Marriage, Historical Website http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/Home/ and entering the information into their search engine, it will give you the first names of the child. With the information you receive from this search and the information given from the newspaper entries you have if not all, nearly all of the information given on a birth certificate printout.
